Yesterday, we had an assembly all around being safe on the internet, in preparation for today, which is Safer Internet Day! The learning main topic of conversation around this has been based around this year's theme ‘Want to talk about it? Making space for conversations about life online’.
In class, we kick started by talking about the different technologies we know and the ones we specifically use at home and in school. We then talked about what we use the range of devices for, leading onto creating a ladder to show our main uses of technology. After this, I read a story called 'Hanni and the Magic Window' (which can be found here: Hanni and the Magic Window | Childnet). This story is based upon Hanni’s home having a very special magic window... but when Hanni sees something that upsets her, she struggles to explain what has happened. This helped us to have a discussion around the thought of the magic window being your device that you are using, and the amazing things that the device enables us to do, BUT ensuring that we talk about anything that happens that isn't quite right, so that it can be put right!
The children were amazing at discussing both real-life situations of experiences they have had, along with talking about made-up situations through a board game, to come up with solutions and what they would do if they were in their shoes! It is clear that the children know who to talk to if they are unsure when using technology, which is amazing!
